What Is Plagiarism and How to Avoid It in Your Papers?

no to plagiarismIn the process of writing a paper, there are plenty of mistakes that can be made. Most of these, such as putting a comma in the wrong place or misspelling a word, will lower your grade a little, but are perfectly forgivable. The one mistake that you never want to make is to plagiarize.

Plagiarism: What Is It?

Plagiarism is presenting someone else’s work as your own without giving them any credit. Essentially, you are claiming to have come up with ideas that actually belong to someone else. Sometimes, plagiarism is actually a mistake. If you don’t keep good notes and place something in your paper and you forget to credit the original writer with, that is plagiarism. If you paraphrase what a writer says and don’t provide credit, that is also plagiarism. A lot of people get into trouble over paraphrasing. Perhaps instructors do not make it clear enough that even though you wrote something in your own words; it is still someone else’s idea.

Even if your plagiarism is purely accidental, it can have devastating results. Often instructors will fail a paper, even a term paper, for just one incident of plagiarism. Plagiarism is a big enough deal that it can cause you to fail the entire class, and in some cases you can even be expelled from school. It is simply not tolerated. For one thing, you do not learn anything when you plagiarize. Copying straight out of a text is just like copying off of someone else’s test paper. Plagiarism cheats the original writer out of the credit that is due to them. Someone worked hard to produce a book or an article, and you do not have the right to claim it as your own. Some students are brash enough to put together a paper by means of the copy/paste feature in word processors. In fact, some do not even write one word out of a whole paper. They copy/paste, look up papers on other people’s personal websites and print them as their own, and even copy information straight from books. Most of this cheating is easily caught by instructors, because the writing will be so much better than what a student usually turns in, or the student has failed to cite a single thing. Make no mistake, if plagiarism is found, serious consequences will follow.

How to Avoid Plagiarism in Your Paper

Some students are simply terrified that they will accidentally plagiarize. The best way to avoid ever having to worry about it is to pay close attention to your sources and take good notes. If you put a direct quote in your paper, make sure it is in quotation marks and cited correctly. If you paraphrase, make sure you use a footnote or a parenthetical citation. Some papers will come with the requirement that you may only use a few direct quotes and only a small amount of paraphrase. If you encounter this type of paper, it simply means that the instructor wants you to analyze the work and put more of your personal thoughts into it. Most papers, however, will have no limit on how much you may quote and paraphrase. Of course, you will never encounter a paper that can be made strictly of quotes. Every paper requires some of your own thoughts. However, if you even think for a minute that a sentence should be in quotes and cited or an idea came more from what you read than what you actually thought, err on the side of caution and cite. There are some things that you do not have to cite. Anything that is considered to be general knowledge can be placed in a paper without quotes or citation. For example, everyone knows that New Year’s Day is on January first. Everyone knows that Washington DC is the Capitol of the United States. You would not have to cite such information. However, if there is no limit to how much you may cite or quote in your paper and you would feel safer citing general knowledge, go ahead and cite it. You won’t lose any points, and you will have all your bases covered. It is a little more work to cite simple things, but if it makes you feel better, the extra work will be worth it.
